EFCC docks Jonathan’s State House doctor for alleged N258.9 million contract scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday arraigned Fortunate Fiberesima, a former Chief Executive Officer, State House Medical Centre, Abuja, before Justice Peter Affen of the Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja on a 6-count charge of money laundering. Mr. Fiberesima, was alleged to have abused his position as the Chief Physician to the President in 2012 in awarding contract to a company where he has interests. Goodluck Jonathan was Nigeria’s president in 2012, a position he held between 2010 and 2015.

Abuja-Kaduna rail service gets 10 new coaches

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) says it is expecting 10 new coaches for the Abuja-Kaduna standard gauge in July to increase the number of its daily trips. The Managing Director of the corporation, Mr Fidet Okhiria made the disclosure in Abuja on Tuesday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). “I am happy to announce that we are expecting some coaches very soon. We have already ordered 10 and hopefully we will order another seven. “When that comes, there will be train at least every one hour, so that people will programme themselves.

A Prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of Mr Femi Fani-Kayode on Tuesday told a Federal High Court, Abuja how he collected N26 million for the defendant from the NSA’s office. Fani-Kayode is a former minister of Aviation. Mr Victor Ehiabhi, the first witness to testify in Fani-Kayode’s trial, said he was sent by the defendant to accompany his gardener, Francis and a domestic staff, Esther to the NSA’s office. Led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Johnson Ojogbane, the witness said he was a police officer at the Force Criminal Investigative Department (FCID) before he was deployed as Fani-Kayode’s security aide.

Ex-Governor Babangida Aliyu remanded in prison

Former Niger State Governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu and the People’s Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate of the 2015 general elections, Umar Nasko have been remanded in the Minna Medium Security Prisons by a Minna High Court Judge, Justice Aliyu Mayaki. The duo are to remain in Prison until the May 3 when a hearing for their bail application will be heard and ruled upon. The decision to keep them in prison was taken after six hours of fierce exchange by Counsel of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Gbolahan Latona and counsels to Aliyu and Nasko, Ayodele Oladeji and Mamman Mike Osuman.

44 IPOB members freed in Bayelsa

A Yenagoa Magistrate’s Court in Bayelsa on Tuesday freed 44  members of the Indigenous People ‎of Biafra. (IPOB), detained since October 2016. The Presiding Magistrate, Penawei Mukoro, upholding the no-case submission by the lawyer to the detainees,  dismissed the three counts of conspiracy, breach of public peace and unlawful gathering levelled against them  by the police. The magistrate  subsequently discharged and acquitted the accused persons. The 44 IPOB members were arrested in October 2016 while meeting in Okaka area of Yenagoa, the state capital, by operatives of the Joint Military Task Force, Operation Delta Safe.

The United Nations needs massive funds to avert famine in Yemen and warring parties there must ensure humanitarian aid can be delivered, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday as he opened a donor conference in Geneva. A U.N. appeal for $1.2 billion this year for Yemen, where Guterres said a child under the age of five dies of preventable causes every 10 minutes, is only 15 percent covered. Two years of conflict between Houthi rebels aligned with Iran and a Western-backed, Saudi-led coalition that carries out air strikes almost daily have killed at least 10,000 people in Yemen, and hunger and disease are rife there.

Pakistani army said four hardcore terrorists involved in “committing heinous offenses relating to terrorism,” were hanged on Tuesday. An army statement said the terrorists were convicted on the charges of killing innocent civilians, attacking armed forces of Pakistan and law enforcement agencies. The terrorists were tried by military courts and were executed at a prison in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Cameroonian journalist to appeal sentence

Mr. Ahmed Abba, the Cameroon journalist jailed for 10 years for terrorism, will appeal the verdict, his lawyer said on Tuesday. Yaoundé military court on Monday sentenced Abba, a local correspondent of Radio France Internationale (RFI), to 10 years in prison on charges of terrorism. Abba’s lawyer said he would appeal the conviction and sentence that has attracted heavy criticisms from rights groups. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) Africa programme coordinator, Ms Angela Quintal, said the “outrageous sentence” signalled the lengths that Cameroon authorities were willing to go to intimidate the media and thwart freedom of the press.

Heavy rainfall causes building to collapse, kills mother and son in Nassarawa state

A mother and her son lost their lives last Sunday after their house collapsed on them during a heavy downpour in Keffi in Nassarawa state. According to reports, the rainfall started midday and lasted into the nights. The remains of the deceased have been buried according to Islamic rites.

The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has accused the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose of plotting to set Nigeria ablaze. MURIC made the allegation while reacting to the claim that Fayose sent some bulldozers to demolish some mosques in his state. In a statement its Director, Ishaq Akintola, MURIC said the action of the governor showed that he was bent on removing all Islamic landmarks in the state. Man rescued alive from 160ft well in Lagos

Tragedy was averted Tuesday morning when a 45-year old man was evacuated from a well. It was gathered that the incident occurred around 6.35 a.m. at No. 38 Kujore Street Ojota, Lagos. Sources said the man, whose name is still unknown as at press time, was found inside the 160ft well, but the process leading to the event could not be ascertained.

Nigeria naira quoted 18 percent weaker at investors' FX window

Nigeria naira was quoted 18.3 percent weaker for portfolio investors on Tuesday compared with the interbank rate, a day after the central bank said it would allow investors to trade the currency at market determined rates. The naira was quoted at 374.25 per dollar on the new foreign exchange trading window introduced by the central bank on Monday for investors, data on market regulator FMDQ OTC Securities Exchange showed. Lagos goes tough as Gov. Ambode's government vows to clamp down on recalcitrant hotel owners

The Lagos State Government on Monday urged hotel and club owners to voluntarily register with the state government to facilitate the ongoing classification and grading of hotels or risk their businesses being shut down. Drug traffickers in escort vehicle nabbed in Kano

The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested two suspected drug traffickers who posed as police officers in Nasarawa area of Kano metropolis. Kano State Commandant of NDLEA, Alhaji Hamza Umar, told newsmen in Kano on Tuesday that the suspects were arrested in a brand new escort vehicle with police colour, siren, pilot plate number and in possession of two police caps.

The National Security Adviser, Babagana Munguno, has begun work on a template for the discovery and recovery of illegal weapons through a reward system. Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, confirmed this development in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday. According to the presidential spokesperson, the Office of National Security Adviser, ONSA, is adopting the whistle-blowing approach so as to eradicate mass shooting incidents and remove the harassment of law abiding citizens by holders of illegal weapons.

Mr Macron won 23.7%, while Ms Le Pen won 21.7%, French TV says. North Korea says ready to strike U.S. aircraft carrier

North Korea said on Sunday it was ready to sink a U.S. aircraft carrier to demonstrate its military might, as two Japanese navy ships joined a U.S. carrier group for exercises in the western Pacific. U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the USS Carl Vinson carrier strike group to sail to waters off the Korean peninsula in response to rising tension over the North's nuclear and missile tests, and its threats to attack the United States and its Asian allies. The United States has not specified where the carrier strike group is as it approaches the area. U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said on Saturday it would arrive "within days" but gave no other details. North Korea remained defiant.

Senator Isiaka Adeleke to be buried today

The first civilian  governor of  Osun state,   Senator Isiaka Adeleke , who died earlier today will be buried at about 4pm in Ede, his hometown. The 62 year-old three time Senator  died  at a private hospital in Osogbo after succumbing to a protracted ailment. A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the residence of the former governor in Ede reports that the atmosphere was emotional as his corpse was brought in at about  1:10 p.m, preparatory to the Islamic burial rites at 4:p.m.

A girl of eight who survived when the car she was in sank in Australia, killing three family members, has described her desperate struggle to raise the alarm. Chloe Kabealo said she had unbuckled her seatbelt and tried to "go up for air", then "just kept floating up out". She said of her lost family members: "They were all loved and they'll never be forgotten." Her father, who was not in the car, said he was "shattered" by the loss.

IG Abubakar wants FG to deduct from states’ budget to fund Nigeria Police

SON impounds N150m sub-standard products in 2016

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) on Sunday said it confiscated substandard goods worth N150 million in the southwest region in 2016. Mrs Oyenike Owoyele, the SON Southwest Regional Coordinator, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Osogbo. Owoyele said that the confiscation was done during operations in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ekiti and Osun States. She said the confiscated goods included used tyres, electrical appliances and food items. Owoyele said that SON would not compromise in ensuring quality life through quality assurance and standardisation of products across the country.

The senator representing Osun West, Isiaka Adeleke, is dead, family sources and one of his colleagues have confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES. Mr. Adeleke, aged 62, died Sunday morning at a hospital in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, hours after he engaged in a political meeting which terminated late Saturday. The Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, says Nigeria needs to focus on aggressive tax revenue generation to drive economic growth. A statement signed by Festus Akanbi, Mrs. Adeosun’s media aide, said the minister gave the advice during a Finance Ministers ’ meeting convened by the G 24 Group at the ongoing IMF/ World Bank Spring meetings in Washington DC. According to the statement, the minister also advised Nigeria to focus on non-oil revenue growth , and budget transparency, adding that revenue mobilisation is key to national growth. “Revenue mobilisation is critical to the success of Nigeria ’ s economic reform agenda,” the minister said.

Trump should revoke visas of corrupt Nigerians – Says Campbell

The United States-based think tank, Council on Foreign Relations, has called on the US President, Donald Trump, to revoke visas of corrupt Nigerian politicians and work with President Muhammadu Buhari to fight corruption in the country. Trump was also advised to collaborate with the South African President, Jacob Zuma. The organisation, however, warned the Trump administration to be prepared to accept blowback from powerful Nigerian political officials. In the latest CFR report released this month, ‘How the Trump Administration Can Help Combat Kleptocracy in Africa,’ co-authored by a former US Ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell, the think tank noted that kleptocracy undermined US interests across sub-Saharan Africa.

Buhari’s government has worst case of human rights violation – Shi’ite tells Osinbajo

The Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, has called on the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo to use his office to order the immediate release of its leader Sheikh Ibraheem El- Zakzaky and his wife from illegal incarceration. IMN gave the call while reacting to a video online, of the Vice President defending the continuous incarceration of its leader who has been in detention since December 2015. Describing El-Zakzaky’s continued detention as the “worst case of human rights violation”, the group maintained that the action of the current government was the “height of impunity that had ever been committed by a democratic government”. In a statement by its President of Media Forum, Ibrahim Musa, sent to DAILY POST, the group stressed that the incarceration of its leader was indefensible.

Association to build cricket pitches in Edo

The Edo Cricket Association says it will build three new practice pitches across the state in a bid to promote the game. The association chairman, Uyi Akpata, announced the plan at the closing of the state’s 2016/2017 Secondary Schools Cricket League/Senior League in Benin on Saturday. He also said part of the 2017/2018 strategy plan to promote the game was to increase the number of secondary schools which play the game from 7 to 15.
