Two factions of NANS engaged in fight over ASUU strike

Two factions of the National Association of Nigerian Students have engaged each other in street fight as they try to show support for either the FG or the teachers in the ongoing strike action embarked upon by ASUU, Punchng reports. The lecturers have been on strike since August 13, in protest of conditions of service, state of education in Nigerian, among others. UI rejects JAMB’s 120 admission cut-off mark

The management of the University of Ibadan (UI) has condemned and rejected the new Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) cut off marks for universities admission for 2017/2018 academic calendar.

596 fail Nigerian Law School Exams

The Nigerian Law School has released  the summary of the final examination results conducted from April 22 to 28, showing that 596 students failed to qualify for the Nigerian Bar. The Director-General, Nigerian Law School, Mr Olanrewaju Onadeko, (SAN)  said that 2, 125 students participated at the examinations while 1,393 were successful.

PTA lists implications of teachers’ strike at unity colleges

Since Monday May 1, 2017 when students of all the Federal Government Colleges (FGC) in the country resumed for the third term academic activities, their counterparts in the north central and the southwest have been idle following the industrial dispute between the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) and the Federal Government. Some of the affected colleges are the Federal Government College (FGC), Ilorin, Kwara State; Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Omu Aran; FGGC, Sagamu; FGC, Ikirun, Osun State; and 10 others.

Former Unibadan Union Leaders Condemn Suspension Of Students' Union

Some of the former University of Ibadan union leaders have condemned the decision of the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Idowu Olayinka, to suspend the union, and the attempt by the varsity Senate to review the students’ union constitution. Speaking on the issue, Jide Abiose, a former chairman of Nnamdi Azikwe Hall, believed that the ongoing imbroglio between the university management and the student is a symptom of a corrupt system.

JAMB reveals most sought-after Nigerian universities

The University of Ilorin had the highest number of admission applications for any university in Nigeria between 2012 and 2016, admission statistics from the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board show. The figures obtained by PREMIUM TIMES reveal the 10 most sought-after universities in Nigeria in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016. It contains no details for 2015 and 2017.

2017 budget Passage excites NANS

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has commended the Senate under the leadership of Dr Bukola Saraki for the passage of the 2017 appropriation bill. A statement by NANS President, Mr Chinonso Obasi, on Sunday in Abuja, said that the eighth Senate had acquitted itself creditably as a source socio-political stability in the present dispensation. He said that the passage of the budget despite challenges showed that the Senate leadership understood the plight of Nigerian masses. Obasi said that the passage of the budget would give Nigerians renewed optimism in the midst of the current socio-economic challenges.

  Every man fights, at least, a battle once in his life time. He either wins or loses. But African allegories are replete with great warriors who are famed for conquering all forces anytime they step out on the battlefield. They are venerated each time the call of duty beckons. And those determined to render honest leadership in Nigeria face a battle-like situation against retrogressive forces.   The current Registrar of Joint Matriculation and Admissions Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede strikes like one such Nigerian-African. He does not belong to the clan of the traditional sword brandishers, but to the ilk of academic and administrative warriors.  His missile never misses a target; he is conqueror and a bulldozer of a rare and extraordinary breed. He is a man who sets his mind and eyes on success anywhere fate has ordained him to serve, and he delivers accordingly.

JAMB registers record 1.7 million students

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, said on Sunday that a record 1.7 million people registered for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME. According to a statement by its spokesperson, JAMB urged Nigerians to have fate in its processes. “We registered a number that has never been done in the entire 39 years of the existence of JAMB within a time frame Nigerians were sceptical about,” the agency said. JAMB gives UTME candidates deadline for data check

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has advised candidates for its Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to crosscheck the data on their registration forms for the last time today. The deadline is 9 pm today 6 May. The board’s Head of Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Lagos. The advice  comes ahead of the 2017 UTME scheduled for May 13 across 633 centres nationwide. The registration of candidates for the examination was closed by the board by 12 midnight on Friday, May 5.

Buhari approves new boards for Federal Polytechnics, Colleges of Education (Full list)

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the reconstitution of governing boards of the 21 federal colleges of education in Nigeria. Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, in a statement said the boards are statutorily responsible for the governance and overall policy formulation in the institutions.

NLC tasks government on teachers’ registration

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to create enabling environment for teachers to acquire professional certificates as required in the country. NLC General Secretary Peter Eson-Ozo said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday. Eson-Ozo said the challenge before the country in the education sector was shortage of teachers and called for partnership with the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) to address the problem. According to him, the aspiration of every parent is to have qualified and certified teachers teaching their children.

University of Ibadan embarks on ASUU strike

Academic activities were paralysed on Wednesday at the University of Ibadan (UI) as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) commenced its one week warning strike. The strike forced most students to stay indoors at their halls of residence, as the strike monitoring committee put in place by the union led by the Chairman of the ASUU in the Branch, Dr Deji Omole monitored development. Omole, who moved round the faculties to monitor compliance, described the strike as successful and urged members to continue to defend their interests.

Sen. Melaye graduated from ABU Zaria – VC confirms

  The Vice Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria Prof. Ibrahim Garba has confirmed that Sen. Dino Melaye graduated from the institution in year 2000. Prof. Garba told the Senate Committee on Ethics Privileges and Public Petitions that the Senator graduated with a 3rd class degree in Geography. He added however that Sen. Dino however graduated as Melaye Daniel Jonah and not as Dino Melaye as he is now known. Recall that last week, following a petition by the former Leader of the Senate Ali Ndume, the Senate directed its committee on Ethics to investigate the alleged certificate scam against Dino.

Six students of UNILAG charged for allegedly gang-raping a 17-year-old female student

Six UNILAG students were arrested for allegedly gang-raping a 17-year-old female student of the same institution and have now been granted bail to the tune of N6 million. The suspects, whose names were given as Simeon Omowole, 18; Randy Chukka, 17; Samuel Oyefara, 18; Peter Adeboyega, 17; Chuka Chukwu, 19; and a female Peace Nwakanma, 18, reportedly conspired with another man who is still at large to rape the unnamed student.  Peace, the only female in the group, is said to have lured the victim to the place where she was raped. The rape was filmed and the video kept as a tool to intimidate her.

NANS advocates for special anti-corruption courts

Chinonso Obasi, NANS President The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for the creation of special anti-corruption courts. NANS’ President, Comrade Chinonso Obasi, made the call while speaking with newsmen at the side-lines of a thanksgiving service to mark the return of Buhari at Faith Miracle Centre International (FMCI) on Sunday in Abuja. According to him, setting up such courts will strengthen the anti-graft fight. He said that NANS’ report on anti-corruption was ready for submission to President Muhammadu Buhari.

JAMB fixes UTME for May, scraps scratchcard

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede yesterday said the much-awaited Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will hold in May as part of steps to check malpractices. He also said the agency had handed over 10 officials to the police for investigation in connection with fraud associated with sales of scratch cards.

FG inaugurates negotiation team on ASUU’s demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday said the Federal Government had inaugurated the negotiation team set up to look into its demand. The National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that with the inauguration, all issues bordering on the welfare of members of the union would be appropriately addressed. “As I speak to you now, the negotiation team is being inaugurated today in Abuja. “Members of the team include representatives of the Federal Government, ASUU, other staff unions in the universities, the Polytechnics and Colleges of Education,’’ Ogunyemi said. According to him, the union expects that members of the team will come to the negotiating table with open minds. The unionist noted that with the inauguration, the team would speedily identify and provide the much needed solutions toward moving the tertiary education system forward.
