WHO gives updates on antibiotics, HIV, cancer drugs

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released new advice on which antibiotics to use for common infections and which to preserve for the most serious circumstances. The advice is among the additions to the WHO Model list of essential medicines for 2017, which includes medicines for HIV, hepatitis C, tuberculosis and leukaemia. The updated list added 30 medicines for adults and 25 for children, and specifies new uses for nine already-listed products, bringing the total to 433 drugs deemed essential for addressing the most important public health needs.

15 children die following botched vaccination

At least 15 children have died from a botched attempt to immunise them against measles in rural South Sudan.  32 other children suffered symptoms of fever, vomiting and diarrhoea but eventually recovered.  South Sudan's health ministry on Friday blamed the deaths on human error.

Doctors to resume strike again in Kogi

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Kogi has directed its members to resume a strike they suspended two weeks ago. The association said in a statement after an emergency congress in Lokoja on Saturday that the resumption of the strike was informed by government’s alleged failure to fulfill its promises to meet their demands.

Buhari disappoints wailers, regains strength

Ailing President Muhammadu Buhari has regained  his strength,significantly improved, doing very good, okay and awaiting his doctor’s nod to return to Nigeria The President left Nigeria for London on May 7 to continue with his medical treatment. Premium Time reports that only his physicians can determine when he will return to Nigeria and to work. “Oh yes; we thank God,” a source in the Nigeria High Commission in London, United Kingdom, told this newspaper when asked if the president’s health had improved substantially.

Expert warns against wrong malaria treatment

Prof. Catherine Falade, a malariaologist and expert in pharmacology and therapeutics, has cautioned  Nigerians and community health officials against the use of Vitamin C and 7up in treating malaria. “Consuming Vitamin C and 7up is not the treatment for malaria; nobody needs Vitamin C to treat malaria. “Nigerians and community healthcare officials should not use it to treat malaria as it cannot cure malaria. “The World Health Organisation (WHO) has standards — Arteminis Combination Therapies (ACTs), injectable and oral administrations are best practices.
