Rainstorm destroys school and compels pupils to study under tree in Ghana

A rainstorm last Sunday night hit the Asante Mampong Municipality in Ashanti, leading to the destruction of the Patasi-Sesease-Kokoben (PSK) MA primary school. The storm destroyed the entire six-classroom block of the school including the furniture, staff common room and a store. During a visit to the school by the Daily Graphic, pupils in classes one to six, numbering 118, were found studying under a big tree, making teaching and learning difficult. Some of the pupils are compelled to bring their own furniture.

Woman dies after drinking poisonous herbal tea

A news release from the San Francisco Department of Public Health confirms that a woman died after consuming poisonous herbal tea purchased in San Francisco's Chinatown. Officials are now urging people to throw away tea purchased from Sun Wing Wo Trading Company.  The woman, who was in her 50s, became "critically ill" in February after drinking tea made from leaves she purchased at the trading company. Shortly after drinking the tea, she experienced "weakness and life-threatening abnormal heart rhythms," which required resuscitation and immediate medical attention. She remained hospitalized and died in the hospital on Saturday, according to public health officials.

Gambia: Barrow is Under Increasing Pressure To Cancel His Planned Tour

If information trickling from the Adama Barrow, State House, is to go by, Mr. Barrow, is under an increasing pressure to cancel his planned nationwide tour to throw his support behind the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) . The rookie president, who replaces Gambia’s longtime dictator Yahya Jammeh, has been advised not to embark on the proposed tour—given the political stakes associated with his blatant patronization of the UDP, at a time, when the nation is undergoing a crucial transition period. This followed a Tuesday news analysis prime time radio program, anchored by Freedom Radio Gambia’s Pa Nderry M’Bai, exposing Barrow’s planned move to favor one political party at the expense of the other parties, which propelled him into the presidency under an independent ticket.

Naira gains against dollar

The continuous Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) intervention in foreign exchange (forex), has caused the Naira to hit the dollar again on Wednesday. The currency traded N400 to a dollar at the black market on Wednesday in Abuja. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Naira has also appreciated against the Pound Sterling and Euro rate as it traded at N510 and N415 respectively.

Ghanaian footballer who mistakenly thanked his wife and girlfriend during his post- match interview has become famous after he denied he’s been unfaithful. Mohammed Anas appeared to dig himself into an even bigger hole when he said he was talking about his daughter in the now legendary interview. “My family knows that I call my daughter my girlfriend. That’s what I was talking about. I don’t have a girlfriend,” the Ghanaian striker said.

President Buhari mourns Abisoye

President Muhammadu Buhari has extended his condolences to the family of Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel Abisoye (Rtd), who has passed away at the age of 81. Late Abisoye was a former General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2nd Infantry Division and 3rd Infantry Division of the Nigerian Army. Abisoye was also a former Federal Commissioner for Health and member of the Supreme Military Council. Mr. Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), said in a statement on Wednesday that the President also commiserated with the government and people of Kogi State on the death.
