Gambia: UDP Executive To Hit The Ground Running For 2017 NA Elections

As the National Assembly elections enters into crucial stage, the United Democratic Party (UDP) executive is bracing to hit the ground running. The UDP nationwide tour will start from Sunday 26th March to Saturday 1st April, 2017. The announcement was made in a laconic news dispatch which was issued late Saturday evening by the party and seen by this reporter. The UDP tou coincides with the Presidential  tour and is expected to mobilise undecided voters to cast their ballot in favor of the party.

Prison inmate to enroll for PhD in Open University

  A prison inmate will soon enroll for a PhD programme in the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdalla Adamu has said. Adamu disclosed this in his address at the opening ceremony of the 53 rd Meeting and 30 th Anniversary of the Committee of Deans of Post-Graduate Schools (CDPGS) in Nigerian Universities on Monday in Abuja. According to Abdalla, prison inmates and juvenile who are willing and qualified are given free education as part of NOUN’s corporate social responsibility.

Scientists seek solution to weed on cassava farms

Scientists in agriculture have begun a project aimed at reducing the menace of weeds on cassava farms to minimize the burden on farmers, especially women and children. The scientists said this on Monday at the 2017 Annual Review and Work Planning Meeting of Cassava Weed Management Project, held at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan. The project leader, Dr Alfred Dixon, said the five-year project which started in 2014 was to address weed menace and how to increase cassava productivity. He said that the project funded by Bill and Melinda Gates’ Foundation would minimise the drudgery of hand weeding by women and children.

Sen. Melaye graduated from ABU Zaria – VC confirms

  The Vice Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria Prof. Ibrahim Garba has confirmed that Sen. Dino Melaye graduated from the institution in year 2000. Prof. Garba told the Senate Committee on Ethics Privileges and Public Petitions that the Senator graduated with a 3rd class degree in Geography. He added however that Sen. Dino however graduated as Melaye Daniel Jonah and not as Dino Melaye as he is now known. Recall that last week, following a petition by the former Leader of the Senate Ali Ndume, the Senate directed its committee on Ethics to investigate the alleged certificate scam against Dino.

The fight tagged “Rumbles in Lagos’’ will hold on 25th May at the Eko Atlantic City, Lagos. Holyfield is 54, while Tinubu is 65. Tanzanian President, John Magufuli arrests rapper for insulting him in his song

Tanzanian President John Magufuli, nicknamed 'The Bulldozer' who is well known for his no-nonsense leadership has arrested a rapper who insulted his government in his new song. Emmanuel Elibariki who is simply known on stage as Ney Wa Mitego aimed multiple shots at the President in his new song 'Wapo', which has gone viral on social media. Part of it asks 'Is there still freedom of expression in the country?' A police spokesperson who confirmed his arrest told a local newspaper that 'Ney wa Mitego will be questioned for releasing a song with words that malign the government.' His arrest comes just days after President John Magufuli warned media owners to be careful on how they use their press freedom.

Ado poly produces 7,500 entrepreneurs

The Centre for Entrepreneurship Development and Vocational Studies of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti has produced 7,500 graduates in five years. The Rector of the institution, Dr Theresa Akande, made this known when she featured at a Forum in Abuja on Monday. Akande said the centre took off in 2011 to encourage self-reliance among students of the polytechnic, adding that it offers training in 17 skills relevant to the economy of Ekiti as an agrarian state. “The idea is to help our students turn the skills they learn in the polytechnic into real business enterprise that will stand them in good stead when they leave school.

Russia snubs EU, US over detained protesters

Russia  on Monday 27 of March rejected calls by the United States and the European Union to release opposition protesters detained during what it said were illegal demonstrations on Sunday. The Kremlin even accused organizers of paying teenagers to attend. The protests, estimated to be the biggest since a wave of anti-Kremlin demonstrations in 2011/2012, come a year before a presidential election that Vladimir Putin is expected to contest, running for what would be a fourth term.

Herdsmen invade Benue prison farm, kills inmate

  The Benue Prisons Service on Monday 27 0f March confirmed that herdsmen invaded its Jato-Aka Farm Centre and killed an inmate, one Tersoo Agidi. ASP Stephen Nwanchor, Public Relations Officer, Benue Prisons Service, said in Makurdi that the incident took place on Saturday at the farm centre. Nwanchor said that the invasion was not a failed jail break attempt. “This is a new farm centre established in January, 2017. The herdsmen invaded the place, destroyed property, shot and killed one Tersoo Agidi, an inmate.

Face of one of the victims of the London terror attacked killed as she went to pick her kids from school

London experienced one of the worst terrorist attacks in recent years yesterday as a driver ploughed down pedestrians on Westminster Bridge then proceeded to stab a police officer to death just outside Parliament The identity of one of the victims has been revealed to be 43-year-old Aysha Frade. The victim was a teacher and mum-of-two and had been on her way to get her kids aged 8 and 11 from school when she was killed. She lived in London with her husband, John Frade and taught at DLD College. Tributes for the woman have been pouring in on social media.

  A woman in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe has claimed to have visited paradise and hell as the Angels and Jesus Christ took her to the places. The woman, Doreen Raphael, who is a member for Jesus Christ for all Nations Church in Lilongwe at Area 24 disclosed to have witnessed many going to hell during her visit while a few going to paradise. The pastor for the church McDonald Banda said he believes what the woman told the congregants arguing he had a prophecy on the trip. Banda disclosed that he prophesied to have seen a member of the church being taken away and visiting paradise and hell. People who have faith in the existence of God believe in life after death which they say is determined by the works of mankind while on earth. Christians believe that sinners will go to hell as punishment for their wrongdoings before God while those living a righteous life are to enjoy in Paradise.

British police arrest 7 over UK Parliament Attack

The British police have arrested seven people in the investigation into an attacker who killed three people and injured about 40 before being shot to death by police, Britain’s most senior counter-terrorism officer said on Thursday. Mark Rowley said the latest figures were that there were four dead including the attacker and 29 people being treated in hospital, seven of whom were in a critical condition. Police had said late on Wednesday that the death toll was five.

Australian woman dies during flight across Pacific Ocean

An Australian woman died on an international flight across the Pacific, however the death was not being treated as suspicious in spite of reports the passenger was a drug mule. Emergency services were called to Sydney International Airport Thursday morning after the 42-year-old woman died on a Delta flight from Los Angeles to Perth in Western Australia. Police boarded the plane and established a crime scene and passengers were left waiting for more than 90 minutes on the tarmac.

Ile Ife Crisis: Police confirm 46 people killed in ethnic clash

At least 46 people were killed and almost 100 others wounded in clashes between rival ethnic groups in southwest Nigeria earlier this month, police said on Wednesday. Special forces were deployed to the city of Ile-Ife in Osun state following two days of violence that broke out between local Yoruba and Hausa people on March 7, Nigeria's national police spokesman Moshood Jimoh told AFP. "The casualty figures are 46 dead and 96 wounded in the violence in Ile-Ife. Of those injured, 81 had been treated while 15 are still in the hospital," Jimoh said.

Political  parties in Zimbabwe have demanded  that presidential elections next year be conducted by a committee set up by the United Nations and African Union because they had lost confidence in the neutrality of the local election agency. President Robert Mugabe, 93 and in power for 30 years, is due to run again. NAN reports that the meeting was attended by Ministers of Foreign Affairs and senior leaders of the 68 countries of the global coalition working to defeat ISIS, in Washington, D.C. Tillerson described the coalition of the Multi-National Joint Task Force against Boko Haram as a success story that the Global Coalition Working to Defeat ISIS must build on.

Five persons were killed and about 40 injured in London on Wednesday after a car plowed into pedestrians and a suspected Islamist-inspired attacker stabbed a policeman close to Britain’s parliament. The dead, in what police called a “marauding terrorist attack,” included the assailant and the policeman he stabbed. The other three victims were among those hit by the car as it sped across Westminster Bridge before crashing into railings just outside parliament.

FEC approves N80b for roads, $1.79b Abuja rail

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved N80 billion for the reconstruction of 12 federal roads across the country and simultaneously also approved contracts for roads and rail in Abuja metropolis. Both the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Muhammad Musa Bello disclosed this at the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, with  President Muhammadu Buhari presiding.

Nigerian, South African scuffle not xenophobia - Ministry

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday said the latest fracas in South Africa, in which two Nigerians were injured, was not borne out of xenophobia. The ministry in a statement by its spokesman, Dr Clement Aduku, in Abuja, said that there was no reported loss of life during the incident. It expressed concern that the incident came barely few days when both Nigerian and South African Governments successfully proffered solution to xenophobic attacks against foreigners in South Africa.
