Mr. Blain, was recently appointed Gambian Ambassador to the United Kingdom. He is waiting on his diplomatic “AGREEMA” to be accepted by the British government before he could commence his new diplomatic assignment duty.

Francis Blain is a brother to the late Tonny Blain, the former Director of Education during the First Republic. He is more than qualified for the post Barrow, has offered him. His appointment will help harmonize the bilateral relationship between Banjul and Britain. It will also speed up Gambia’s readmission to the Commonwealth—given his verse experience in diplomacy.

ECOWAS boss appoints special envoy to Liberia
  Lagos- Nigeria (PANA) — ECOWAS Executive Secretary Mohamed Ibn Chambas has appointed Gambian diplomat Francis Blain as his Special Envoy to Liberia, a statement from the ECOWAS headquarters in Abuja said Tuesday.

   The Special Envoy will conduct the political and diplomatic aspects of the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) peace process in Liberia after the conclusion of the ongoing peace talks in Accra, Ghana.

   Blain, 60, previously served as the Resident Representative and Resident Coordinator of the UN Development System in Liberia, a position he held until 1989.
   He also served in his country’s Foreign Service, capping his career in the service with a posting to New York as the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of The Gambia to the UN.
   Blain has already met with ECOWAS Chair and Ghanaian President John Kufuor and President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria.

   The appointment of a Special Envoy was one of the decisions approved at the 31st July 2003 extraordinary summit of ECOWAS leaders in Accra.
   Meanwhile, Nigerian soldiers, the Vanguard Force of the ECOWAS Mission in Liberia (ECOMILI), started deploying in Liberia Monday to help maintain the 17 June ceasefire between the warring parties and ensure delivery of humanitarian aid to embattled citizens.
