Gunmen attack, abduct boat owner in Bayelsa
Unidentified gunmen have struck in the
Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, abducting a local boat
owner, Chief John Okotoro.
The incident was said to have occurred on Sunday at Amatu II community of Ekeremor LGA.
The abductors, who reportedly shot continuously, were said to have stormed the area through a jetty at about 4.30am.
The gunmen were said to have shot at anyone in sight and looted goods before whisking away Okotoro.
The attack came barely one week after some gunmen killed some personnel of the Joint Military Task Force in the Niger Delta, Operation Delta Safe.
A community leader in Amatu II, Chief
Paul Oweipadei, lamented that the people of the area were living in
constant fear of attacks from gunmen and sea pirates.
Oweipadei appealed to the Bayelsa State Government and security agencies to beef up security along the waterways.
He said, “The community is worried that
the activities of these gunmen, if not checked, could disrupt the smooth
operations of SPDC’s EA field located in Amatu II.”
Calls to the spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command, Mr. Asinim Butswat, rang out.
